Dr. Harms loves teaching students of all levels. Dr. Harms teaches trumpet at the University of Maine-Orono starting Fall 2026, and at Colby College in Waterville, ME. Dr. Harms offers free or reduced price lessons to seniors in high school or undergraduate programs who commit to attending the University of Maine as Music Education or Performance majors, and to those admitted to Colby College who commit to taking lessons upon arrival.
Dr. Harms also teaches other students, including beginners through area professionals. The hourly rate for lessons is $100 and he teaches in increments of 45 ad 60 minutes. Dr. Harms is available either in person in the Bangor/Orono area, and sometimes available in the Boston/Providence and Burlington metro areas, depending on the orchestra schedule, as well as virtually*.
Dr. Harms teaches fundamentals, repertoire, and orchestral excerpts and seeks to understand underlying problems as quickly and as positively as possible. Dr. Harms seeks to help clients make the trumpet as easy as possible, and although everyone has different needs, a student can generally expect lessons to address tension, flow, ease, resonance, song, listening, and singing, among other principles taught to him by his teachers and discovered through practice. Dr. Harms also loves to teach audition materials and techniques for professional auditions, college auditions, and festivals.
*for virtual lessons, please pre-set Zoom to “original audio for musicians.” These lessons also work best on a laptop with an external microphone, like a Blue Yeti.
