The Studio
Private instruction rooted in sound conception, imagination, and the cultivation of a deeply personal musical voice. Available in person at the University of Maine and online worldwide.
Music is best learned by listening. Before technique, before notation, there must be sound — internally heard, vividly imagined, and as complete as possible in the mind.
My work in the studio is aimed at connecting the student to that sound, and to the physical sensation of producing it. Over time, as those connections deepen, sound and feel begin to speak directly to one another — without conscious mediation. The player steps back, and the music organizes itself. This cycle is the engine of real development.
A sound that isn’t working is telling you something. Learning to hear what it is saying — rather than bracing against it — is where we begin.
Ear first
The ear is the primary instrument. Students develop the internal sound model first — studying great recordings, careful back-and-forth playing, and learning to listen diagnostically rather than judgmentally.
Imagination as technique
Much of what appears mechanical is cognitive in origin. We work to build an internal model that is as complete as possible — including tone, resonance, ease, and expressive intent — before the instrument is raised.
Non-defensive playing
Tension and inconsistency are most often protective responses, not technical failures. We identify and dissolve the assumptions that generate interference, rather than layering correction on top of correction.
Breadth of experience
Students are encouraged to pursue other art forms, languages, and disciplines. Technology, mathematics, travel — none of these are separate from music. Each builds a smarter, more self-aware musician.
Dr. Harms is available for private instruction in trumpet at all levels, from motivated high school students through advanced graduate-level players. Lessons are available both in person at the University of Maine–Orono and virtually — students anywhere in the world are welcome.
Online lessons are conducted via video call and are every bit as effective as in-person sessions. Many of the most important work in the studio — developing the internal sound model, questioning assumptions, sharpening the ear — translates completely to the virtual format.
The studio welcomes students at all stages of development who are willing to listen carefully, question their assumptions, and commit to the process of building a genuinely personal musical voice.

Students are expected to arrive having practiced the assigned material. Lessons are most productive when the student comes with specific questions and observations.
Students are encouraged to record lessons for personal review. Regular self-listening is one of the most valuable habits a musician can develop.
